Methods of Dental Restoration?

Methods of dental restoration

Tooth restoration is done in two ways, direct and indirect.

The Direct Method

In this method, the restorative material used is available in the dentist’s office and the dentist repairs your teeth with the appropriate material after machining is done in the same session. The restorative material used in this method is usually amalgam and composite. In some cases, such as small caries on the root surface, another repair agent called glass ionomer is used.

Amalgam

Amalgam has a dark color but it is rather strong. For this reason, it is mostly used in the back parts of the mouth, which are not visible when talking and smiling. Amalgam restorations have been reported to last up to 25 years.

Composite

The composite has the same color as the tooth. That is why composites are used to repair front teeth. The lifespan of composite restorations is estimated to be up to 15 years.

The Indirect Method

In the indirect method, the restorative material that is placed on your tooth is not available in the dentist’s office and is made in the laboratory. Indirect restorations, called inlay and onlay, are often made of gold and ceramics. The lifespan of indirect restorations is longer than direct restorations and is estimated at about 20 years.

Who Is It Not For?

If the amount of tissue lost from the tooth is high, it may be necessary to use a post and core with a dental veneer to repair it. The core mimics the shape crown of the tooth while the post is placed inside the root. The post, which is attached to the blind, is used to help place the blind on the tooth. Finally, a veneer is used on the tooth to cover the blind and the remaining tissue from the crown.

If the amount of tissue lost from the tooth is beyond repair, the tooth may not be preserved. In this case, the tooth should be removed and replaced with a dental implant or dental bridge.

Pre-Treatment Preparation

  • The dentist first examines the tissue of your mouth and teeth.
  • At this stage you may need to take a radiographic image of your teeth.
  • After that, the dentist will offer you a suitable treatment plan based on the examinations, radiographies and your own request.
  • If the caries or fracture is very deep, it may also involve a dental pulp, which contains the nerve and blood vessels of the tooth. In these cases, denervation and tooth restoration should be performed, respectively.

How It Is Done

how dental restoration is done
  • To repair a broken, decayed, or damaged tooth, your dentist will first anesthetize your tooth.
  • He will then machine your teeth to remove caries and create the right shape in the tooth for placing the restorative material. This shape varies depending on the type of restorative material.
  • At this stage, depending on the type of restorative material, different tooth restoration methods are used.

Direct repair:
For this type of restoration, the dentist gradually places the restorative material on your tooth and then gives it a shape similar to the shape of the tooth itself. It then attaches the restorative material to the tooth.

Indirect repair:
For indirect restoration, the dentist molds the tooth after it is cut and fills the tooth with a temporary restorative material. Then, in the laboratory, based on the mold that is prepared from your tooth, a proper restoration of your tooth is made. At the next session, the dentist will apply the restoration to your tooth.
